Why You Should Sweat the Small Stuff: How Attention to Detail Means Everything

When I was 12, my parents “employed” me at their company (*cough CHILD LABOR). My job was to stick custom labels on glass bottles. I finished sticking hundreds of them. My mom came in to check on me and said, “These labels are crooked.” I looked at them and thought, “Barely.” She made me redo every single one.

I was at the UPS store shipping a package yesterday. The man looked at my completed form and typed the client’s name into the computer. I said, “You spelled his last name wrong.” He said, “That’s ok, as long as the address is correct it will get there.”

My mind flashed back to sticking the labels on bottles. Um, that is not ok. That is someone’s name and it can be easily fixed in 3 seconds. If you don’t care enough to get that right, what do you care about? I asked him to change it.

People, whether they say they care or not, notice these little things and are drawn to those who take time to do a good job.

I LOVE Disney and I LOVE Japanese culture because they pay major attention to detail. Those little things . . . it shows you care.
