I yelled upstairs to my mom, “Maaaaa? Do you have hairspray?.” I went into her bathroom and opened the cabinet. There was a can of Bumble & Bumble hairspray. After spraying my bangs I made a passing comment – “This is good hairspray.” My mom continued brushing her teeth.
The next time I went home she handed me a bag. I looked in and unraveled the tissue. It was a new can of the same Bumble & Bumble hairspray.
My mom has bought me much grander things, but the hairspray ranks as one of my favorite gifts I’ve ever received. Gift giving has never been a big deal to me – I can care less about the actual item. What meant a lot to me was that my mom was listening. The comment I made was quick but she heard me.
