2 Ways To Balance Work and Personal Life

Balancing work and personal life doesn’t happen one day and then stay perfect forever. It takes constant awareness to make sure all the areas in your life feel good.

My struggle with work is that I love it too much. When I was starting my business I neglected my health and relationships because EVERYTHING was about photography, networking, and getting my business up and running.

Here are 2 things I’ve found that help balance work and personal life:

1.  Separate your home and work space.

I worked from home for 5 years. It was convenient but not productive, not to mention depressing. A good friend of mine says, “The problem with working from home is that you either can’t stop working, or you never start.” This generation has many entrepreneurs who all face the same problem so shared office spaces are opening to fix that. At the office space I rent, their slogan is – Because working alone sucks.

It’s true. Investing in an office space is 1000x worth it if it means you’ll be happier. I go to the office to answer emails, edit photos, and make phone calls. Not to mention it forces me to get out of my pj’s. Once I finish my to-do list, I go home.

2.  Make time for the things you love (besides your job).

Outside of photography I REALLY like eating, yoga, dance class, and adventures. When I’m not working I call a pal and do one of the above activities (this way my relationships get nurtured too). My Monday and Wednesday evenings are dedicated to dance (making sure my body feels good). Tuesdays and Fridays are yoga.

My friends and I make an effort to try new restaurants or explore parts of the city we’ve never been to. Right now we’re talking about doing a road trip to Zion and Bryce Canyon, and a bigger trip next year to Iceland or Morocco. The important thing is to make time and effort to do personal things you love. Keep your soul nourished!

Conclusion

If you’re feeling burnt out or not good, look to see which area of your life needs more (or less) attention. You only have one body and one life. Make it count.
