Letting Go Of Perfection: It’s Really Okay to Suck Sometimes

Excelling at things is in my DNA. It feels good to accomplish something, but the real reason is because I don’t like being bad at something.

Everyone sucks when they start out. That’s how you get good. I know that. But I have to remind myself because sometimes I’m so uncomfortable with sucking that it will discourage me from trying something new.

Yoga. I like yoga because I took dance and gymnastics growing up, so being good at it comes easy.

I went to hip hop class once and there was an old Chinese man standing in front. He could not pick up any of the steps. NONE. But, as his arms and legs flailed, he had the hugest smile on his face. The next week I saw him in class again. He was clearly enjoying himself and did not give a crap about getting the steps or what anyone thought. He just wanted to dance.

Anytime I feel like I’m sucking at something, I think of that old man.

Life is short. Enjoy yourself. Try something new and suck at it.
